Week 1 answer

The speaker is Michael Geoghegan, podcaster (Grape Radio, Willnick Productions). He’s interviewed by Heather Green on Business Week Online’s Cutting Edge podcast. Go to the Business Week site to hear the whole 11-minute interview.

When he mentions podcasts that are consumed but not necessarily downloaded, Geoghegan is speaking of the problem with the language in questions asked in podcasting surveys. Here’s just that part of the interview, a one-minute snip of Heather’s question about surveys, and Michael’s response.

It will be more fun if you chime in.

Can’t think of anything to say? Try answering one of these questions:

    • Did you know who was speaking?

    • Do you believe the research on podcasting?
    • Do you think podcasting is getting to be more mainstream?
    • Do you think traditional tech analysts get podcasting (I don’t).

I’ve heard podcasters get almost angry when they find out people listen mostly from a web page rather than subscribing to the feed. What’s that about?

Comments from first-time commenters are held in a moderation cue. Don’t be offended if I don’t get to them right away, especially while I’m at work.

I thought it was Arrington, at first, but I heard Geoghegan say this on some other podcast, must be one of the twits. I notice he doesn’t sound so bassy on other podcasts besides his.

research on podcasting? Its still a geeky thing, I think. Especially without an iPod, and a desire to explore iTunes. And in terms of advertisers and numbers, I think that the sample size isn’t small enough that a few “fans” could affect the results. Compared to the Neilsens, where I’m guessing the sample size is huge, and “fans” are knocked out, just as being out of the norm. All guesses. :)
As far as podcasting in the main stream. Numb3rs from 01/05/07 had the bad guy podcast his message to his flock, and I was very pleased and felt this was the first sign podcasting really had hit the mainstream, though its a geeky mainstream ;)

Traditional journalists are undeniably leery of “citizen journalism” which I believe podcasts and blogs are. And credibility is in the eye of the reader, eh? :)
I appreciate all you do, keep up the good work, and experimentation.

MissM, I didn’t know you were a Numb3rs fan. Me, too. I was a little creeped out by that alt-LDS guys with the podcast.

I think everybody is guessing about this stuff, still.

Thanks for getting the ball rolling.

I’ve recently got the means to try listening away from the computer, but haven’t yet. When I get back to work in earnest for the year I’ll be interested to see if I make the jump - I don’t listen to any regularly yet.

Hil, I’ll be interested to see if you take to podcasts. What kind of player did you get?

    It’s an iRiver T20:

Only 512MB, but I think that will be okay for my purposes. I like that it also has a radio, though I would have liked it to get AM as well as FM. I know that is a bit odd these days.

What’s your AM radio like in Australia? Ours now are mostly all-news and all-sports.

Oooh. I’m so tempted to put up another one before the week is out. I heard a good one today, and by Sunday it will be too old.

Now I’ve locked myself in though, with the name. I’d have to redo all those graphics…

    How’s this for shilly-shallying?

    shillyshally

Generally speaking AM here is crap - golden oldies etc. But I like listening to ABC Radio National which has lots of news/arts/social commentary, and that is on AM. They podcast just about everything though.

I do like this ethnic rug design, Amy; really cool.
